Jo Taylor recounted this tale from her childhood:
Grampy Wilf DARCH (not my Grampy, but Jane's, my best friend) used to come to our house to pick up scraps for his hens; it didn't take much to get him telling us tales of his family. Apparently they originated as D'ARCY but it changed over the years. He told us that his grandfather and brother set out, walking, from the Cornish tin mines when there was less work (or fewer mines), with the intention of coming to Combe Martin to work in the silver mines. Grampy Wilf's grandfather made it but his brother stopped half way - I think it was Tavistock or somewhere round there, where mining work was available.
This tale told in 1999, Jo was then approaching 50.

This all ties together fairly well - Wilf was born in 1895, the son of Matthew and Sarah. Matthew was born in 1865, the son of William and Susan Lerwill. William was himself the son of Thomas and Elizabeth, born about 1818. So this Wilfred was the great-grandson of Thomas who appears to be the first of the family in Combmartin.
Where Thomas came from is quite a different matter. There was a Darch family in Stratton, near Bude in Cornwall, but I think the tin mines were not there, and there is no recorded Thomas of the right age from there. I have yet to find a Thomas born in the period 1780 - 1785 from anywhere in Cornwall, or anywhere else for that matter! Interestingly, the first Darch in Stratton was also a Thomas, but about 30 years older than this one.

Thomas walked from Cornwall! The first known reference to Darch in Combmartin.

Their fifth child. William married (possibly away from Combe Martin, his wife came from Goodleigh) and had a number of children in Combe Martin - and he probably stayed in the village all his life, apart from some time working on farms around North Devon before he married. He is certainly working at Arlington in 1871 and the first child was christened in 1874.

COMBMARTIN REVEL - ASSAULT CASE - John Jewell, James Jewell, James Norman and John Witheridge, all of Combmartin, were charged by Sarah Norman, wife of John Norman, of the same place, with violently assaulting and beating her at twelve o'clock, on the night of the 8th August being Combmartin revel. Mr. L. Bencroft appeared for the defendants. -
The hearing of the case occupied a long time and the evidence was contradictory. It appeared that the complainant, her husband and son, were on their way home when the defendants came up, and the older Norman said in their hearing that his son (in wrestling) should throw the Jewells. The woman deposed that all four of them "?vall'd aboard" of herself and husband - that both were several times knocked down - that Witheridge tore her clothes from her back and left her naked, that she sustained serious injuries from their violence, such as the fracture of a rib, bruises of the head, chest and right arm, &c. A medical certificate was put in - This evidence was confirmed by Mary Lancey, Richard Norman and Richard Darch. - For the defence, it was alleged that the Normans were the aggressors, and that John Norman commenced the affray - a statement which was supported by the testimony of Philip Richards and Ann Richards; the latter said complainants clothes were torn by Witheridge in his attempts to pull her off Jewell, whom she was belabouring. - The Bench found the case proved, and fined the defendants 10s. each; the parties to pay their own costs, as the complainant was not free from blame. - A cross summons had been issued at the instance of James Jewell, who charged John Norman, husband of the complainant in the proceedings with assaulting him on the night in question. - Mr. L. Bencroft appeared for Jewell. - The offence was proved and the defendant fined 10s and the expenses. (Kathy Witheridge 23 September 1999)
